Owning, Using and Renting: Some Simple Economics of the “Sharing Economy”

چکیده
Entrepreneurs have created a number of new Internet-based platforms that enable owners to rent out their durable goodswhen not using them for personal consumption. We develop amodel of these kinds of markets in order to analyze the determinants of ownership, rental rates, quantities, and the surplus generated in these markets. Our analysis considers both a short run, before consumers can revise their ownership decisions and a long run, in which they can. This allows us to explore how patterns of ownership and consumptionmight change as a result of these newmarkets. We also examine the impact of bringing-to-market costs, such as depreciation, labor costs and transaction costs and consider the platform’s pricing problem. An online survey of consumers broadly supports the modeling assumptions employed. For example, ownership is determined by individuals’ forward-looking assessments of planned usage. Factors enabling sharing markets to flourish are explored. JEL L1, D23, D47

The Third Entrepreneurial Revolution: A Middleman Economy
The sharing economy will blur the distinctions between renting and owning a wide variety of durable products. The first great entrepreneurial (Neolithic) revolution transformed hunter-gatherers into fixed agriculturalists. The second (Industrial) revolution dramatically reduced the costs of owning products. The third (Transactions Costs) revolution will reduce the costs of exchange, fostering a...
متن کاملPeer-to-Peer Product Sharing: Implications for Ownership, Usage and Social Welfare in the Sharing Economy
We describe an equilibrium model of peer-to-peer product sharing, or collaborative consumption, where individuals with varying usage levels make decisions about whether or not to own. Owners are able to generate income from renting their products to non-owners while non-owners are able to access these products through renting on as needed basis. We characterize equilibrium outcomes, including o...
متن کاملA Public Bicycle Sharing System Considering Renting and Middle Stations
Recently, public bicycle sharing system (PBSS) has become one of the most favorite urban transportation systems that can help governments to decrease environmental problems such as pollution and traffic. This paper studies a sharing system that includes two types of stations. The first category contains stations that users can rent or return back bicycles and each bicycle can be rented by any n...

This study investigates monetary and financial shocks on macroeconomic variables, focusing on the role of banking intervention. For this purpose, a Keynesian dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model is designed for Iran’s economy that involves financial and banking sectors. The results of the model simulation show that the financial accelerator theory works in the Iranian economy. Al...

Abstract: Resident’s housing consumption and investment behavior is an important micro basis of housing policies in China, and has an important influence on the development of real estate market and the structure of housing supply. In this article, I developed a dynamic optimization model base on utility maximization to simulate the housing behavior of Chinese resident during all his life, and ...
